Gaming News - Steam Got Hacked

Steam Hacked: Newell - "Watch Your Credit Card"

Gabe Newell, founder and CEO of Valve Software, has announced that the online digital store, game library and multiplayer network has experienced a security breach and data loss. The announcement, released today (Thursday), began with the news that the Steam forums had been “defaced” in an attack on Sunday, and went on:

We learned that intruders obtained access to a Steam database in addition to the forums. This database contained information including user names, hashed and salted passwords, game purchases, email addresses, billing addresses and encrypted credit card information. We do not have evidence that encrypted credit card numbers or personally identifying information were taken by the intruders, or that the protection on credit card numbers or passwords was cracked. We are still investigating.

We don’t have evidence of credit card misuse at this time. Nonetheless you should watch your credit card activity and statements closely.

While we only know of a few forum accounts that have been compromised, all forum users will be required to change their passwords the next time they login. If you have used your Steam forum password on other accounts you should change those passwords as well.

We do not know of any compromised Steam accounts, so we are not planning to force a change of Steam account passwords (which are separate from forum passwords). However, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to change that as well, especially if it is the same as your Steam forum account password.

Once the jitters have subsided, this doesn’t look on face value as bad as it might. The greatest danger is probably to those who used the same password for their Steam and Steam forums accounts, or – worse – have been using the same password for multiple accounts, including their email. This is particularly dangerous as, along with probably providing a means to obtain passwords for every other online service connected to that address, it invalidates the Steam Guard protection, introduced in March, which requires verification by email whenever a user’s Steam account is accessed from a new computer.

“My steam account is worth more than my bank account”

Security failures are a nightmare for Steam and its users, not least because they highlight the fragility of the cloud. By making all games purchased through Steam accessible for download at any time, Steam is a great way for gamers to buy far more games than they could ever fit on their hard drives, or their shelves. Commenting on the PC gaming site Rock, Paper, Shotgun, one dismayed player commented

My steam account is worth more than my bank account

In short, panic is not required, but vigilance would be welcome – and if you have used the same password across multiple services (a) don’t do that and (b) change your passwords.

Valve’s size and dominance in the digital download market, with over 30 million registered accounts, makes this a source of concern. On the plus side, the evidence is at least that Steam’s identity protection has been doing the right things in the event of a security failure. The passwords captured are hashed and salted – although a short, simple password may still be vulnerable to a brute-force attack, depending on the level of encryption, as they were when Gawker’s database was compromised.

Now, the reason I'm all against DRM and any other useless clients is due to one of these reasons. The cause and effects are beyond our control, most people says GFWL is far worse DRM/Game Client than steam or such, I'd say both are bad and only Steam is the lesser of both evils.

The system is not in our control, when getting a game from Steam it's just the license you're getting, not the whole game. Say of an earthquake or something disabled the international connection (which is frequent these days), you're stuck with SP gaming whole week long till it's fixed. It's a long story and discussion i can make about DRMs and Game Clients, but not this time yet. :)

Borderlands 2 - 14 minutes gameplay vid

Bad news is, the game is schedule to 2013 release, so there's still a long time till its out. But hey....this is also a prove of good new, taking their time to fix the right stuff instead of forcing it out to the market with half baked stuffs !

OMFG !!! Look at the guns and new skill types and best of all ? ROLAND from the first Borderlands !

Visit Borderlands 2's site for more updates time to time ! Also have a look at Game Informer's site with more details on the game from the developers view and to the game itself.

Adrift - Neo-Paris 2084

This looks good, especially the cyberpunk theme.

This looks like a good ol' genre being revived back into action, its good to have a breathing room in the current hack "n" slash action RPGs crowd.

Epic Games focusing back on PC as primary platform

Epic Games is working on five new games that have nothing to do with Gears of War, president Mike Capps has revealed.
Each of the games are in varying stages of development.
"It's nice to target the PC as a primary platform again," teased Capps, "not just for ports."
The revelation was made during a presentation at Gamescom in Germany today. Responding to an audience question, Capps suggested these five titles maybe smaller in scope than, say, the Gears of War projects.
"At Epic we didn't multiply the studio size by five when we started workig on these multiple projects," answered Capps, "so you can make some assumptions about the size of those projects".
Capps went on to suggest that companies need smaller-sized projects to counter-balance the big-bucks, high-stakes blockbusters.
"Everyone knows the middle class is disappearing from the console business," he said. "Gears of War I hope will do really well, but a pretty good game doesn't make its money back any more. A game like Homefront sells a couple of million copies and they close the studio, right?
"That's not enough any more. That's pretty depressing. You don't want to see what happens to an industry where it's Call of Duty, Halo and Gears and no-one else has enough money to make any games any more. That's not a fun industry.
"I can't bet my entire company every time I make a game," declared Capps. "That's a really dangerous business."
GamesIndustry.biz reporter Dan Pearson attended the speech.
Epic Games-owned studio Chair has already promised to make Shadow Complex 2. That Chair will also follow-up its success with Infinity Blade on iOS devices is also probable.
Its sure good to hear a Triple-A company mentioning this, but again for the sake of making money, how true will it be ?

Gaming News : Killzone 3 leaked !

Wow, and wow ! Just within these months, we get to hear some leaking here and there, sound like they need a plumber to fix the future leaks.

Killzone, reported leaked online few weeks ago and the developers are well aware of it and the leaked version even includes a 3D mode. So there goes the consoles future on piracy + internal spies, even the consoles get pirated once the games are more focused on them.

But then again, the leak is the fault of the company themselves, big question is how da fuk these companies manages the security in keeping their stuffs safe before release ?

Gaming News : Crysis 2 leaked all over the internet

" Man, this is shit..."

Crytek has been alerted that an early incomplete, unfinished build of Crysis 2 has appeared on Torrent sites.  Crytek and EA are deeply disappointed by the news. We encourage fans to support the game and the development team by waiting and purchasing the final, polished game on March 22.  Crysis 2 is still in development and promises to be the ultimate action blockbuster as the series’ signature Nanosuit lets you be the weapon as you defend NYC from an alien invasion.  Piracy continues to damage the PC packaged goods market and the PC development community.

Well, looks like EA/Crytek took a big hit in the balls when someone copied and leaked the beta version of the game out. Based on unconfirmed sources, the game was leaked by staffs ? wtf indeed !

The beta is somewhat near to completion and worst of all it has the master authentication key used for most EA games which runs under the online verification and authentication.
